Air India launched the specially designed cabin interiors of its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, a significant step in its Vihaan.AI transformation program.
The aircraft, VT-AWA, was directly delivered from Boeing’s facility in Everett to Air India and will begin commercial service on the Mumbai-Frankfurt route on February 1, 2027. The new interiors will be rolled out across Air India’s entire fleet of 787s by the middle of 2027.
Key Highlights
The three-class configuration includes 296 seats: 30 Business Class suites with sliding doors, 28 Premium Economy seats and 238 Economy seats. Each cabin has 4K inflight entertainment screens, Bluetooth audio connectivity and USB-C power. The interior design, done with JPA Design, combines a modern luxury feel with understated Indian heritage motifs and soft color palettes.

One notable feature is the new chakra-inspired mood lighting system, which was developed in conjunction with Tata Elxsi and designed to improve passenger wellbeing and reduce the effects of long-haul travel.
According to CEO Campbell Wilson, these aircraft are part of Air India’s fleet renewal strategy and are the first widebody aircraft that were designed completely by and for an airline. This will ultimately lead to a consistent premium experience across Air India’s long-haul route network, as there will also be 19 additional line-fit 787-9s purchased by Air India and 26 existing retrofitted 787-8s.
