The Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), the hospitality arm of the Tata Group, is ramping up its presence in North East India in alignment with the national agenda for regional development.
IHCL Managing Director and CEO Puneet Chhatwal announced several key initiatives, particularly in Assam and Tripura. Among the major developments, IHCL plans to open a hotel in Jagiroad, strategically located near the upcoming Tata Electronics factory, and another luxury property in Kaziranga, known for its wildlife tourism. The existing Vivanta in Guwahati will be upgraded to a Taj hotel, with expanded room capacity and enhanced banquet facilities.
Key Highlights
A significant highlight is the announcement of North East India’s first ‘Taj Palace’ property — the Taj Pushpabanta Palace in Agartala, Tripura. This 1917-built heritage palace, developed in partnership with the Tripura government, will be restored and expanded into a 100-room luxury hotel over the next three years.
Currently, IHCL operates 15 hotels with 1,348 rooms across the North East, and has six more in the pipeline, adding 634 rooms. The company has also recently entered into a strategic partnership with the Ambuja Neotia Group to develop 15 additional hotels, with a strong focus on Eastern and North Eastern India.
