Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on February 5 that the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will construct 8 lakh affordable homes across the state in the next five years.
Shinde, who also holds the housing and urban development portfolio, made this announcement at a housing lottery event where winners for 2,147 affordable homes and 117 plots in the Konkan division were declared.
He emphasized that MHADA’s transparent lottery system has strengthened public trust, with over 31,000 applicants for the current draw.
“Owning a home is a dream for everyone, and the Maharashtra government is committed to providing the maximum number of affordable houses. MHADA and various state agencies are actively working towards this goal,” he stated.
Shinde highlighted that MHADA is constructing homes under multiple schemes, including cluster development and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). He noted that the authority is currently executing Asia’s largest cluster development project in Thane while also undertaking several similar projects in Mumbai.
According to Maharashtra government data, MHADA, the state’s nodal agency for affordable housing, has constructed 5,05,802 housing units, including redevelopment projects, since its inception in December 1977. The agency continues to play a crucial role in addressing the state’s housing needs.
Shinde further announced that MHADA will conduct another housing lottery within the next six months, providing a second opportunity for those who do not win in the current draw. He encouraged applicants to remain hopeful and assured that the government remains committed to expanding affordable housing options across Maharashtra.
