Bihar Government aims to Provide Urban Housing for All by August 2025

The state government is accelerating its efforts to provide housing for all urban residents by August 2025, according to Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena. A mission-mode approach is being implemented to achieve this ambitious goal.

Current data indicates that 264,604 houses are under construction through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Shahri. Of these, 148,630 units have been completed, while 117,974 are still in progress. Recent progress shows an accelerated pace of construction, with 41,080 houses completed in the last three months alone. The government is confident that this momentum will continue, enabling them to meet the August 2025 deadline.

In addition to ongoing construction, a survey is being conducted to identify any eligible individuals who may have been omitted from the initial list. This survey is expected to be finalized by February.

The government is employing various strategies to address urban housing needs. For those who own land, financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakh is available for house construction under the beneficiary-led construction program.

This funding is split between the central government (Rs. 1.50 lakh) and the state government (Rs. 50,000). Families residing in slums without land ownership will be provided housing through the institutional development program.

Furthermore, the government's real estate policy will allocate housing for the economically weaker sections, specifically targeting those in the low-income group.

Recognizing the need for adequate staffing, the chief secretary highlighted efforts to address the shortage of engineers in local urban bodies. Retired engineers are being utilized, and approximately 500 junior engineers have been newly recruited to support the mission-mode implementation of these housing initiatives.
