Architecture today extends far beyond the creation of buildings. It is about shaping environments that respond to evolving lifestyles, environmental realities, cultural narratives, and technological advancements.
As homeowners increasingly seek spaces that are deeply personal, sustainable, and enduring, architects are expected to balance aesthetics with functionality while designing places that genuinely enrich everyday living. Amlab Studio has built its practice around this philosophy.
Founded in 2015 by architect Asit Mandal, the New Delhi-based firm believes that meaningful architecture begins with understanding the people, place, and purpose behind every project. Over the years, the studio has established a strong presence across residential, hospitality, office, and adaptive reuse projects throughout India and Nepal.
Rather than pursuing fleeting design trends, it creates architecture that is rooted in its surroundings, responds to climate, and reflects the identity of the people who inhabit it.
This philosophy has positioned the firm as a thoughtful contributor to contemporary architecture, particularly in the residential segment, where personalization, sustainability, and long-term value have become defining priorities.
Through its collaborative approach and commitment to authentic design, Amlab Studio continues to demonstrate how architecture can remain both timeless and relevant in a rapidly changing world.

Designing Homes around People
For Amlab Studio, residential architecture begins not with buildings, but with people. The firm believes that every home should emerge from a deep understanding of its occupants, their lifestyles, aspirations, and daily routines.
This client-centric approach shapes every stage of the design process. Before discussions around layouts, materials, or aesthetics begin, the team invests considerable time in understanding how clients envision their living environments. These conversations form the foundation upon which the entire design narrative is built.
The studio views architecture as a collaborative journey rather than a one-way creative exercise. Clients remain actively involved throughout the process, allowing the design to evolve through dialogue and shared decision-making. This emphasis on engagement not only strengthens trust but also ensures that each project reflects the individuality of its users.
"The best compliment we receive isn't that a house looks beautiful - it's when clients tell us it feels like it was always meant to be theirs," says Asit Mandal, Founder. "That sense of belonging is the true measure of successful architecture because it reflects a space that has been thoughtfully shaped around the people who live in it," he adds.
The result is a portfolio of homes that feel highly personalized while maintaining a strong architectural identity.
The Pursuit of Timeless and Sustainable Design
In an era increasingly influenced by rapidly changing trends, Amlab Studio remains committed to a design philosophy centered on authenticity and longevity. A defining characteristic of the firm's work is its honest use of materials. Natural materials such as stone and wood are celebrated for their inherent qualities and allowed to age gracefully rather than being manipulated to imitate something they are not.
For Amlab Studio, residential architecture begins not with buildings, but with people
The studio also integrates sustainability as an intrinsic component of the design process rather than treating it as a secondary consideration. Climate-responsive planning, natural ventilation, daylight optimization, durable materials, and energy conscious strategies are incorporated from the earliest stages of development.
Technology, too, is approached with purpose. Rather than adopting innovation for its novelty, Amlab Studio carefully evaluates whether new systems genuinely enhance the user experience. Smart home technologies, lighting controls, automation systems, and energy-efficient solutions are incorporated only when they contribute meaningfully to comfort, convenience, and long-term performance. This balanced approach enables the firm to create homes that are both future-ready and enduringly relevant.
Transforming Heritage through Contemporary Vision
Among the firm's notable residential projects is the transformation of a 20,000-square-foot residence in Kolkata. Originally constructed in the 1950s, the property presented an opportunity to demonstrate Amlab Studio's expertise in site-sensitive adaptive reuse and thoughtful architectural intervention.
Rather than demolishing the existing structure, the team chose to carefully reimagine it as a contemporary luxury residence while preserving its architectural character. Working within the framework of an aging steel and RCC structure required significant technical precision, particularly as new openings were introduced to maximize natural light and ventilation.

“The surrounding landscape played a crucial role in shaping the final design. Living spaces were strategically oriented to frame views of nearby greenery and a tranquil waterbody, establishing a seamless connection between the interiors and the natural environment. Equally important was the close collaboration with the client, whose involvement throughout the project contributed to a highly personalized outcome,” shares Asit Mandal.
The residence stands as a reflection of the studio's broader design values: respect for the existing character of the site, adaptive reuse, authentic materiality, and collaborative design thinking. It demonstrates how contemporary interventions can coexist with historical character to create spaces that feel both modern and deeply rooted.
Building a Context-Driven Future
Working across diverse geographies has strengthened the firm's ability to interpret local traditions, craftsmanship, climate, and cultural narratives, translating them into contemporary spaces that remain authentic to their setting. Whether incorporating traditional craftsmanship into a modern residence in Nepal or responding to the unique cultural and climatic conditions of a project site elsewhere, Amlab Studio seeks to create designs that grow naturally from their environment while meeting contemporary expectations.
Looking ahead, the firm aims to deepen its presence in the residential and hospitality sectors while continuing to cultivate strong relationships with clients and communities. Its ambition extends beyond designing buildings; it seeks to contribute positively to the environments and cultures it engages with.
Recognition as one of the leading Residential Architects by Homes India Magazine reflects this commitment. More than an accolade, it serves as validation of the studio's belief that architecture should be people-centric, authentic, and responsive.
As the practice evolves, Amlab Studio remains committed to creating architecture that is shaped by its environment, informed by its users, and designed to stand the test of time. By balancing innovation with authenticity and collaboration with craftsmanship, the studio continues to demonstrate that meaningful architecture is not simply designed - it is discovered within the unique character of every place and every client it serves.
