Akar Design Studio By Ashritha K: Crafting Landscapes of Meaning & Memory

What makes a landscape truly memorable? It’s not just the plants or the design elements, it’s the personal stories and memories that breathe life into the space. Few landscape consultants truly understand that every outdoor space has the potential to reflect the unique experiences and aspirations of those who use it. At Akar Design Studio, this philosophy is at the heart of every project, where the team carefully listens to clients’ stories and dreams, using them as a foundation to create spaces that are not only functional but deeply personal and meaningful.

Akar Design Studio, founded by architect and urban planner Ashritha K in Bangalore, focuses on creating meaningful and functional landscapes. The studio started with a small courtyard project for a family home in Karnataka, designed to support daily routines, quiet moments, and shared experiences. With simple features like a lily pond, stone benches, and a brass bell, the space showed how thoughtful design could connect people to nature and tradition. This approach caught attention, and over the past five years, Akar Design Studio has completed more than 80 projects, including private homes, resorts, heritage buildings, and public spaces.

What sets Akar Design Studio apart is its steady, careful process. The team listens closely to the needs of each site before starting any design work. Its goal is to create spaces that are not just visually appealing but also long-lasting and personal. Instead of following design trends, the studio focuses on clarity, honesty, and empathy in every project. “We believe that every space should feel like an extension of the people who use it. Our close-knit team of architects, interior designers, and landscape designers come together, to create spaces that feel just right and stand the test of time”, adds Ashritha.

Offering Rooted in Personalization & Purpose

Akar Design Studio offers a range of landscape design services tailored to both residential and commercial settings. Its flagship service lies in curated courtyard landscapes, which marry South Indian architectural traditions with contemporary sensibilities.

From intimate pooja gardens and family patios to shaded verandahs and forest-like backyards, each space is envisioned as a personal sanctuary.

Beyond residential work, the studio designs thoughtful green environments for corporate campuses, boutique resorts, public institutions, and hospitality venues. “These commercial landscapes are planned not just for aesthetic value but for environmental performance, incorporating climate-responsive planting, passive cooling strategies, and sensory elements that elevate user experience. We also offer customized garden accessories, outdoor furniture, and regionally crafted decor pieces to blend functionality with a strong regional identity”, asserts Ashritha. In an industry often driven by visual trends, Akar’s focus has remained on spaces that endure stylistically, perform ecologically, and comfort emotionally. From courtyard homes in heritage settings to nature-forward office landscapes, each site is treated as a canvas waiting to unfold its narrative.

Processes, Precision, & Post-Care

The studio’s production process blends technical rigor with craft sensitivity. While tools like BIM modeling and parametric planning ensure accuracy and efficiency, hand-drawn sketches, physical material samples, and site walkthroughs allow clients to stay connected to the tactile nature of the design. Materials are locally sourced wherever possible to maintain high quality and ecological balance. Soil health, irrigation planning, and plant selection are all carefully studied to suit regional climates. The studio also works with an extended team of horticulturists, lighting specialists, irrigation consultants, and artisans, some of whom have been collaborators since Akar Design Studio’s founding.

  • Our focus remains on spaces that endure stylistically, perform ecologically, and comfort emotionally

Where the studio particularly shines is its approach to post-completion care. Clients are supported through seasonal garden maintenance, plant health check-ins, and educational walkthroughs. The studio offers hands-on gardening workshops and long-term care plans for those who wish to deepen their connection to their space. This ongoing relationship helps landscapes evolve along with the lives they host. The studio’s accessories reflect the same level of intent. Aged brass urulis, weathered benches, terracotta lanterns, and frangipani-lined pathways all add emotional and spatial rhythm without overwhelming the environment. It avoids over-design, allowing nature and memory to take center stage.

A Future Rooted in Tradition

The journey of Akar Design Studio has included its fair share of challenges, from navigating bureaucratic hurdles to educating clients about the benefits of native over exotic species. Yet, each challenge has reinforced the studio’s commitment to thoughtful, research-backed design. One standout example was a government office site in Andhra Pradesh, where the transformation of a barren courtyard into a lush, story-rich landscape involved months of community consultation and site-specific storytelling.

As the design world leans further into customization, the studio finds itself perfectly positioned. The studio continues to receive growing interest in vertical herb gardens, edible landscapes, drought-resistant planting schemes, and modular outdoor seating. Responding to this, Akar Design Studio is also developing a regionally inspired product line of tools and accessories, designed to meet the needs of a conscious, evolving clientele. “As we look to the future, we are working on building a native plant repository, supporting young landscape designers through a fellowship, and nurturing green corridors in South India’s tier-II towns. We hope that these small steps will leave a lasting impact on both our industry and the environment”, concludes Ashritha.
