Mumbai’s Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has unveiled a suite of technology-driven reforms designed to fast-track slum rehabilitation projects across the city. With over 50 percent of Mumbai’s population living in slums, these digital initiatives mark a major step toward transforming Mumbai into a slum-free city and integrating slum dwellers into the urban mainstream.
Under the leadership of Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar, CEO of SRA, the authority has launched advanced digital systems, including an STQC-certified website, integrated online modules, blockchain-based file approvals, and AI-powered chatbots for improved consumer engagement. These innovations aim to ensure faster project approvals, greater transparency, and enhanced accountability while keeping the welfare of slum families at the forefront.
Key Highlights
Rajan Bandelkar, Vice Chairman of NAREDCO, lauded SRA’s proactive and transparent approach, emphasizing that the adoption of digital processes will not only expedite project clearances but also boost developer confidence in Mumbai’s slum redevelopment ecosystem. He added that such reforms will play a crucial role in driving sustainable urban growth and improving the quality of life for thousands of slum dwellers.
Echoing this sentiment, Abhay Chandak, Vice President of NAREDCO Maharashtra, applauded SRA’s efficiency in implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to handle demolition and eviction of non-cooperative structures within 45 days. He cited the recent demolition of 1,000 structures in Worli within a month as a testament to SRA’s swift and effective action.
These tech-driven reforms by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority signify a major shift toward digital governance, efficient project management, and transparent urban development. With streamlined approval systems and real-time monitoring, Mumbai is steadily progressing on its path to becoming a slum-free metropolis, where innovation and inclusivity go hand in hand.
