Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa is strengthening its sustainability journey through biodiversity-led initiatives aligned with Paathya, the ESG+ framework of Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL).
The framework integrates environmental stewardship, community engagement, and responsible operations, with Taj Madikeri emerging as a flagship implementation.
Located within a 180-acre rainforest in Coorg, the resort was developed over seven years using only 30 acres for infrastructure, preserving tree cover. Construction used compressed stabilised earth blocks made from displaced soil and sun-dried to reduce emissions, achieving a near-zero construction footprint.
Key Highlights
Natural land contours were retained, and excavated soil created a freshwater lake supporting biodiversity and rainwater harvesting. The estate sustains 310 bird species, 68 butterflies, 79 mammals, and 32 frog species. With an Air Quality Index below 3 and a plastic-free environment, ecological integrity shapes the guest experience. A dedicated Batracharium, guided by an in-house naturalist, showcases amphibian life.
The resort also runs a Biodiversity Photography Club, guided forest walks, a Butterfly Park, honey cultivation with 32 bee colonies, pottery sessions, and a heritage conservatory celebrating Kodava culture.
Operational measures include natural ventilation, daylight optimisation, LED lighting, wastewater recycling, and sourcing over 84% of electricity from wind energy. Petrol vehicles have been replaced with Tata Punch EVs to reduce emissions and noise.
