Sharjah Unveils Homes Built Inside the Sea at Kalba

Synopsis: Sharjah has unveiled a new Kalba masterplan featuring innovative homes built inside the sea, alongside waterfront, tourism, and infrastructure projects aimed at transforming the city into a sustainable coastal destination.

Sharjah has announced an ambitious masterplan for Kalba that includes the development of homes built inside the sea, marking one of the emirate's most distinctive waterfront projects to date. The initiative forms part of a broader transformation strategy aimed at enhancing Kalba's appeal as a residential, tourism, and leisure destination while preserving its natural coastal environment.  

The announcement was made by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, during the "Direct Line" programme on the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority. He said the sea-based residences are among several landmark developments scheduled for inauguration in December 2026, following years of continuous planning and construction across the city.

The planned homes will be constructed within the sea as part of the wider Khor Kalba City masterplan, introducing a unique coastal living concept designed to complement the area's natural landscape. While authorities have not yet disclosed the number of residences, investment value, construction timeline, or intended buyers, the project is expected to become a defining feature of Kalba's future urban development.

The sea-based residential development is one element of a comprehensive regeneration programme that includes new road networks, corniche enhancements, compensation housing, Al Hayar Lake, rest areas, improved roads in Wadi Al Helo, and additional tourism attractions. Together, these projects aim to improve connectivity, public infrastructure, and the quality of life for residents while supporting economic growth through tourism and investment.

According to the Sharjah Ruler, the transformation of Kalba has been underway for more than seven years. During this period, the emirate has completed numerous infrastructures, environmental, and heritage projects intended to modernise the city while protecting its ecological assets. The latest announcements represent the next phase of that long-term development strategy.

Kalba occupies a strategic position on the Gulf of Oman and is renowned for its mangrove forests, protected nature reserves, mountains, and coastline. The city has increasingly emerged as an eco-tourism destination through investments in waterfront developments, conservation centres, public parks, heritage restoration, and hospitality projects that balance tourism with environmental preservation.

The introduction of sea-based homes reflects the growing popularity of premium waterfront developments across the UAE. Developers and government authorities are increasingly creating distinctive residential communities that combine scenic coastal settings with modern amenities to attract investors, second-home buyers, and tourists seeking exclusive lifestyle destinations.
