PM Modi Launches Tricity Highway Projects on July 17

Synopsis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated and laid the foundation for major highway projects worth over ₹5,600 crore in Punjab and Haryana, improving connectivity across the Chandigarh Tricity region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a series of national highway projects worth over ₹5,600 crore aimed at significantly improving road connectivity across the Chandigarh Tricity region, including Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur, and surrounding areas. The projects are expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and strengthen regional economic growth by enhancing transport infrastructure.

Among the key projects is the Zirakpur Bypass, which has been inaugurated to decongest one of the busiest traffic corridors in northern India. The bypass is designed to divert through traffic away from Zirakpur town, reducing congestion for commuters travelling between Chandigarh, Delhi, Patiala, Ambala, and other neighbouring cities. The project is expected to substantially improve travel efficiency while lowering fuel consumption and vehicle emissions.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for the Airport–Aerocity Road, a major connectivity project that will provide seamless access between Chandigarh International Airport and the rapidly developing Aerocity area in Mohali. The new road is expected to support commercial, residential, and industrial development by improving access to one of the region's fastest-growing urban corridors.

In addition to these projects, the government announced several highway upgrades and road expansion initiatives across Punjab and Haryana as part of its broader strategy to modernise transport infrastructure. The projects are intended to improve connectivity between major urban centres, industrial clusters, logistics hubs, and border regions while supporting economic activity throughout northern India.

The enhanced highway network is expected to benefit daily commuters, freight operators, and businesses by reducing travel time and improving the movement of goods and services. Better road infrastructure is also likely to strengthen tourism, facilitate investment, and improve access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and commercial centres across the Tricity region.

The infrastructure initiatives form part of the Centre's continued emphasis on expanding India's national highway network under flagship programmes focused on improving multimodal connectivity and accelerating regional development. Over the past decade, significant investments have been made in road infrastructure to support economic growth and improve transportation efficiency across the country.

Officials said the projects will also contribute to better traffic management by creating alternative routes for long-distance vehicles, reducing pressure on existing urban roads. Improved connectivity around Chandigarh International Airport and Aerocity is expected to encourage new investments in real estate, hospitality, logistics, and commercial development.

The Chandigarh Tricity region has witnessed rapid urbanisation in recent years, resulting in increased traffic volumes and growing demand for upgraded transport infrastructure. The new highway projects are expected to address these challenges while supporting future population growth and expanding economic activity in the region.

Industry experts believe that improved road connectivity will enhance the competitiveness of Punjab and Haryana by facilitating smoother movement of people and goods. Reduced logistics costs, faster travel, and improved access to industrial zones are expected to create long-term economic benefits for businesses and residents alike.

With the completion of the Zirakpur Bypass and the commencement of additional highway projects, the government aims to create a more integrated transport network that strengthens connectivity across North India.
