The Northeast is about to get a lot more welcoming. A new report says the number of branded hotel rooms here will nearly double by 2030, turning the region into a real travel hotspot.
Right now, there are just over 3,400 branded rooms across the eight states — less than 2% of India’s total. Sikkim and Assam lead the pack, with Gangtok and Guwahati making up more than half. But change is coming fast. Over 3,000 new rooms are already in the works, mostly in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Tripura, and Nagaland.
Assam is driving the boom. Guwahati alone will add nearly 2,000 rooms, with more planned in smaller towns. Arunachal will get around 660, mainly in Tawang and Itanagar. Sikkim expects over 250 new keys, Tripura about 180, and Nagaland is starting to see interest. Mizoram, Meghalaya, and parts of Nagaland are still left out, though.
Key Highlights:
Why the sudden growth? Better roads, faster trains, and more flights. Last year, airports in the region handled a record 11.2 million passengers. Tourists are finally discovering the hills, rivers, and cultures that locals have always known.
Big hotel chains are jumping in. Radisson already runs two hotels in Guwahati and Imphal and has two more coming up. "Northeast India is undergoing a remarkable transformation," said Nikhil Sharma, Managing Director and COO (South Asia) at Radisson Hotel Group. "With enhanced infrastructure, sustainable tourism models, and robust public-private collaboration, the region is fast emerging as one of South Asia's most promising hospitality frontiers."
Still, not everything is smooth. Rules differ from state to state, and red tape scares off investors. The report calls for a single-window system to approve tourism projects faster.

If that happens, places like Mizoram and Meghalaya could finally get their share of visitors — and jobs. For now, the Northeast is waking up. By 2030, it won’t just be beautiful. It’ll be ready for guests.
