The Indian REITs Association (IRA) has officially joined the Global REIT Alliance, an international coalition formed to enhance the visibility, effectiveness, and global integration of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).

The announcement was made during the 2025 ReThink Conference, hosted by the European Public Real Estate Association (EPRA) in Stockholm, Sweden.

The alliance brings together representatives from 24 countries and regions, aiming to strengthen REITs as a trusted global asset class.

Key Highlights

  • Indian REITs Association joins the Global REIT Alliance of 24 countries
  • Alliance aims to raise awareness, set standards, and promote sustainability in REITs
  • Marks India’s integration into global financial markets and its expanding REIT sector

Its six core objectives include raising global awareness of REITs, fostering cross-border knowledge exchange, influencing supportive public policy, guiding voluntary standards, promoting sustainable investment practices, and advancing research-driven market transparency.

For India, participation in this coalition reflects both the growing maturity of its domestic REIT market and its integration into global financial systems. India launched its first REIT in 2019, and the market has since expanded rapidly, attracting significant domestic and international investor interest.

Industry leaders noted that India is well positioned to contribute to the alliance’s broader goals, especially in areas of investment opportunities, sustainability, and aligning practices with international standards. By joining, India underscores its ambition to help shape the future of global REIT frameworks while reinforcing confidence in REITs as a mechanism for economic growth, infrastructure funding, and democratized real estate investment.

Preeti Chheda, Executive Committee Member of the Indian REITs Association and Chief Financial Officer of Mindspace Business Parks REIT, represented India at the launch event in Stockholm. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Chheda stated, “Becoming a part of the Global REIT Alliance marks a significant milestone for the Indian REIT market. This alliance provides a vital platform to collaborate with the global REIT community, exchange market perspectives, and collectively drive the growth of REITs globally.”

Peter Verwer, spokesperson for the Global REIT Alliance, welcomed the IRA's inclusion. “We are delighted to welcome the Indian REITs Association to the Global REIT Alliance. India’s REIT market has already demonstrated remarkable growth in a relatively short span of time, and its inclusion will bring valuable insights and perspectives to the Alliance,” he said.
