Dwelve Studio : Designing Holistic and Nature-Connected Living Environments

Greig Fernandes

Architecture consultants today are seeing clear shifts in client preferences towards healthier and more sustainable living. Minimalism has become a major trend, with people seeking fewer but higher-quality elements that last longer and create calmer spaces.

Alongside this, there is a growing revival of traditional building methods such as mud construction, rammed earth, lime plaster, and clay finishes, materials that naturally regulate temperature, improve indoor air quality, and reduce carbon impact.

Dwelve Studio stands at the forefront of these shifts, actively pushing these ideas into practice and shaping its projects around long-term environmental and human well-being.

Dwelve Studio was formed by a close-knit group of young architects who first collaborated through the Young Architects Collective Goa, a collective they created after college to work on competitions and share ideas.

Their strong sense of teamwork and open discussion naturally evolved into a practice built on democratic thinking, where every voice contributes to shaping the final design. “Our studio’s mission is rooted in creating spaces that support holistic living by strengthening the relationship between people, nature, and the built environment.

We believe that good design should improve both mental and physical well-being, using natural light, ventilation, Vegetation, and thoughtful spatial planning to create healthier everyday experiences”, shares Greig Fernandes, Creative Head at Dwelve Studio.

Dwelve Studio offers turnkey architecture and interior design services, along with real estate consultation. Its approach aims to create environments that feel fulfilling, sustainable, and culturally grounded.

The team often guides clients toward choices that encourage healthier lifestyles, such as integrating vertical gardens, using natural systems, and reducing reliance on artificial comforts.

Balancing Heritage & Development

As India undergoes rapid economic expansion, the costs associated with living, building materials, and long-term maintenance continue to rise. Heritage structures, while culturally irreplaceable, often demand significant investment to preserve and rejuvenate.

“The struggle to balance heritage conservation with urban growth extends far beyond architectural technique, since it is deeply tied to economics, awareness, and societal values. We can design sensitive

solutions to restore such buildings to its former charm, but if the local community cannot sustainably manage the recurring expenses, these structures risk slipping back into disrepair”, adds Greig.

A major challenge in heritage conservation today is the lack of public under standing. Traditional construction methods, which have allowed structures in regions like Goa to endure harsh weather for centuries, are rarely highlighted, while modern materials, heavily marketed through media, often overshadow their proven resilience.

This makes it harder for communities to appreciate the value of preserving heritage. Beyond the  physical structures, heritage carries deep social and emotional meaning, reflecting a time when people lived more connected, grounded, and fulfilled lives.

Dwelve Studio is working to revive and integrate traditional materials and techniques into contemporary designs, to show how heritage can coexist with modern living while preserving cultural identity, continuity, and healthier ways of life for the future.

Notable Projects

Among the many carefully crafted works by Dwelve Studio, several projects stand out for its sensitivity, innovation, and sustainability. One of the studio’s earliest achievements, Vista do Rio, earned the award for Best Built Residential Project in Goa in 2019.

This home sets the tone for the practice’s future, thoughtfully designed, context-driven, and deeply rooted in natural living. The studio has since worked on a diverse range of projects, including boutique Airbnb homes designed for extremely low maintenance and long-term durability.

Another remarkable example is the restoration of an 1882 residence, where the team revived original lime plaster, salvaged old walls, and reused timber rather than replacing it with modern materials. The challenge lay not only in the traditional craftsmanship but also in helping clients appreciate the beauty of preserving history in a world that often equates new with better.

Dwelve Studio also explored more experimental ideas in projects like Casa Azure, later named 419.8 Neev, where open, free-flowing spaces redefine everyday living. Another project in Moira showcases the studio’s ambition to design homes capable of sustaining electricity, water, and food production.

With a footprint of about 1,000 square Meters, the home incorporates systems for energy generation and an extensive kitchen garden that can produce months’ worth of vegetables.

The Way Ahead

Dwelve Studio’s future goals focus on growing their collaborative approach and creating larger, more connected, and more sustainable environments.

With expertise in urban design, it aims to take on projects that go beyond single plots and look at shaping whole neighborhoods, where different plans and ideas can support each other and strengthen the overall ecosystem.

A major part of its vision is to use new technologies such as solar walls, solar tiles and windows pans and cladding that also act as solar panels , water recharge pits and tanks with filter units for reuse and recharge along with smart vertical gardens, to help its projects reach about 75 percent self-sufficiency in energy.

“We believe that when homes become more sustainable, people living in them feel calmer, healthier, and more fulfilled, creating a positive effect across communities. As we expand across India and regions like East Africa, we hope to learn from locals through their years of experimentation and evolution, and bring those insights into our future designs”, concludes Greig.
