Goa’s architectural landscape is shaped by a unique convergence of heritage, climate, and rapid contemporary development.
Known for its rich Indo-Portuguese legacy, traditional village fabric, and strong connection to nature, the state has long followed an architecture rooted in local materials and climate-responsive design.
In recent years, however, Goa has witnessed a significant transformation, driven by increased interest in residential and luxury housing, as people seek alternatives to dense urban living.
This shift has brought new opportunities for architectural expression while also demanding a sensitive balance between growth and preservation.
Within this evolving context, Designed Spaces Architecture positions itself as a practice that thoughtfully bridges Goa’s architectural heritage with contemporary luxury living through context-driven, climate-responsive, and concept-led design.
Designed Spaces Architecture was founded by Melville F. D’Souza, who is also the Principal Architect in the firm.
Born and raised in Mumbai with Goan roots, Melville’s early exposure to both urban life and Goa’s rich natural and architectural heritage deeply influenced his design philosophy.
After completing his architectural education at Dr. D.Y. Patil College of Architecture, Navi Mumbai, he gained professional experience with reputed firms in Mumbai and Hyderabad, before moving to Goa to work on large hospitality projects.
His years of practice in Goa allowed him to witness the region’s evolving architectural landscape while reconnecting with its traditional building wisdom.
Inspired by this balance of heritage and growth, he established Designed Spaces Architecture in 2008, beginning with residential and commercial projects that emphasized strong concepts and thoughtful design.
With a strong background in hospitality design, the practice brings a deep understanding of planning efficiency, spatial flow, and user experience into its work.
This foundation has strongly influenced the firm’s approach to residential architecture, where the primary focus today lies in creating well-planned homes that prioritise comfort, clarity, and long-term livability.
In residential projects, Designed Spaces Architecture concentrates on crafting homes that respond to the client’s lifestyle and the site’s context, ensuring spaces feel intuitive, balanced, and enduring.
Alongside architectural design, the firm also undertakes selective interior and concept-driven assignments, particularly where architecture and interiors need to be developed as a cohesive whole.
The studio’s services span from early-stage planning and design development through to detailed documentation and consultant coordination, with a strong emphasis on buildability and execution clarity.
Spanish Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Tuscan influences, as well as innovative use of materials such as sandstone to create distinctive textures and visual richness. Beyond design ideation, Designed Spaces Architecture offers comprehensive architectural services, including design development, statutory approvals, detailed working drawings, coordination with structural, MEP, and interior consultants, and end-to-end project support.
“We draw inspiration from Goa’s rich architectural traditions, from humble mud houses to grand Portuguese-era mansions, to create designs that are both timeless and contextually relevant. Every project we undertake is carefully tailored to its surroundings, combining aesthetic appeal with practical functionality and climate-responsive planning”, adds Melville.
We aim to contribute positively to Goa’s built environment while preserving its ecological balance by integrating sustainable practices into every project
Notable Architectural Projects
Designed Spaces Architecture has delivered several distinctive projects that have become benchmarks in Goa’s architectural landscape. Among the most memorable is Casa del Senor in Moira, completed in 2017. This development of five villas seamlessly blends Spanish Hacienda elements with traditional Goan architectural vocabulary, resulting in a project widely admired for its elegance, balance, and contextual sensitivity.
Another iconic project is the Tudor House in Assagao, which has evolved into a recognizable landmark in the village. Although designed as duplex residential apartments, the building’s grand facade and proportions give it the appearance of a stately mansion, cleverly combining the charm of a heritage structure with the functionality and amenities of modern living.
The firm has also received acclaim for its award-winning themed projects. Casa del León, a Mediterranean-inspired development, was recognized for its innovative architectural expression, while Casa Creole in Moira, a Caribbean-inspired villa project, was named Best Themed Project of the Year in 2022.
Emerging Architectural Trends
Designed Spaces Architecture is currently witnessing a strong demand for thoughtfully designed luxury housing in Goa, where clients seek refined aesthetics combined with efficient use of space. The firm has developed a distinct expertise in crafting high-end residences that feel expansive, functional, and elegant, even within constrained site conditions.
Alongside this growing preference for luxury living, technology has become a key driver in the architectural process. “We actively use advanced design software to create detailed 3D visualizations and immersive walkthroughs, so our clients can fully experience their projects even before construction begins.
With the integration of AI, we can now explore multiple design options and perspectives more quickly and precisely, enhancing collaboration and creativity”, shares Melville.

Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Designed Spaces Architecture is focused on shaping a future rooted in meaningful and environmentally responsible design. As Goa continues to attract increasing development, particularly in the housing sector, the pressure on its limited natural resources is expected to grow significantly.
Recognizing this challenge, the firm’s long-term goal is to ensure that every project is conceived with sustainability at its core. This includes environmentally sensitive planning, efficient use of resources, and design strategies that respond thoughtfully to climate and context.
“We aim to contribute positively to Goa’s built environment while preserving its ecological balance by integrating sustainable practices into every project. Our vision is to create architecture that meets present needs while safeguarding the region’s natural heritage for future generations”, concludes Melville.
