Brindavan by De Square Architects Redefines Tropical Design

Brindavan house Bangalore

The residential project “Brindavan,” designed by De Square Architects under principal architect Naveen GJ in Bangalore, presents a refined interpretation of tropical, climate-responsive living.

A key design decision—driven by the technical requirement of a raft foundation—resulted in elevating the entire structure five feet above natural ground. This elevated plinth enhances privacy, improves airflow, and lends the home a subtle yet commanding street presence.

The raised base also enables a creative spatial intervention: concealing the car ramp beneath a lush garden deck.

Key Highlights

  • Elevated design enhances airflow, privacy, and spatial innovation
  • Central courtyard enables passive cooling and spiritual core
  • Tropical materials and façade ensure climate-responsive living

This transforms a functional necessity into a vibrant green feature, visually connecting indoor and outdoor spaces. The garden is dramatically framed through expansive glazed openings, allowing it to function as a living artwork integrated into daily life.

At the heart of the residence lies an inward-facing, open-to-sky courtyard that serves as both a spiritual and climatic core. Anchored by a centrally placed puja room, this space fosters a meditative atmosphere while enabling passive cooling through cross-ventilation and natural light penetration—critical in dense urban contexts. The courtyard also acts as a thermal buffer, enhancing comfort across adjoining spaces.

Material choices reinforce the home’s tropical identity. Exposed brick walls, natural stone flooring, and finely crafted wood joinery provide both aesthetic warmth and climate efficiency.

The façade further reflects regional sensibilities with pitched Mangalore tile roofs, shaded verandahs, and deep overhangs that protect against sun and monsoon rains.

Carefully oriented fenestrations ensure daylight access and constant engagement with the outdoors. Overall, Brindavan stands as a thoughtful, context-driven architectural response, merging modern design with traditional principles to create a sustainable and culturally rooted living environment.
