Colonial-period buildings beside the Hooghly River, Kolkata
Remaining a hotbed for colonial architecture such as Victorian, Gothic & Neoclassical, and this architecture conveys about the colonial influence of the British empires. The buildings in Kolkata are a blend of European & Indian styles from various periods. It is built by British East India Company, the Old Fort William acts as a powerful testament for British architecture which served as a key military base during the 18th century. Surrounded by a highly elevated brick wall, the fort has total 3 gates.
The core gate was situated on the north & other two gates are situated on the east & west sides of the fort. Innovatively the fort was constructed in a Hexagonal shape & had an area of more than 10 acres.
Most prominent evident for colonial architectural style are Howrah Bridge & Victoria memorial. Passing over the Hooghly River, the Howrah Bridge is built with re-imposed concrete monoliths & steel of great stretchable strength. The whole structure of the bridge includes the two key towers, cantilever arms & anchor arms. Today the bridge sees over 100,000 vehicles every day.
Likewise, the victoria memorial is constructed in the Indo-saracenic style by blending the Mughal & British elements with Deccani architectural influences. Spanning over 60 acres, the gardens of memorial holds gazing fountains, floral beds, pools, lawns with walkways presents a tranquil environment for visitors. Further Museums, gateways, & water bodies together are notable structures in in the area.
