Embrace The Transitional Modern Decor Style's Timeless Appeal

The contemporary decor style has got an upgrade, as ‘transitional modern home decor’ takes prominence. This ‘younger version of a traditional home’ is a perfect blend of crisp white walls, with minimal but ornate furniture. Marbles, stones, woven fabrics, timber and wood, thus come into the picture. The timeless and minimal appeal of these elements helps merge the modern with the classic, thus helping us create a calming and relaxing vibe at home, synonymous with transitioning modern decor style. “You can place a vintage wooden chest of drawers next to a sleek metal-framed bed, or use traditional Indian rugs and carpets to create contrast against modern concrete, tile, or marble flooring,” says Preine Pereira, founder, Studio Palasa.

“A signature light fixture complimented with warm woods, and off-white walls with a blend of contemporary and traditional accessories suits any transitional room.

Typically, deep colour tones work well. Warm browns to chocolate wood tones make for great choices as well,” adds Pramitha Roche – head of product and design experience, Bonito Designs. Shades of beige, grey, and white create a calming and sophisticated ambience. “These neutral hues are also a great backdrop if you plan to add a pop of colour with decorative accents such as pillows, rugs, and artwork. With a neutral colour palette, you can easily switch up accent pieces and refresh your space without having to overhaul your entire design scheme,” says Archana K, head centre of design excellence (CODE), Pepperfry.

“Go for a carefully curated colour palette that has shades of teal, sky blue, salmon and burnt yellow, with crisp white borders. The combination of these hues will create a warm and inviting atmosphere that evokes the beauty and tranquillity of the English countryside,” shares Ekant Singh, founder and CEO, Page 2813.

“You can arrange a sofa with clean, straight lines with a curved armchair. You can also place a round coffee or centre table, to take the edge off, literally,” suggests Shweta Shridhar, co-founder, The Table Fable.

“To strike the perfect balance between the old and the new, why not add antique accessories or decor elements? For instance, you can display vintage brass or silverware on a modern glass shelf or hang an antique tapestry on a plain white wall to create a stunning focal point. To add a touch of modernity, pair these old elements with modern furniture pieces that feature clean lines and minimalistic designs,” says Pereira. “A sense of whimsy and playfulness can also be added to the space by using bold floral motifs in upholstery. This also serves as a nod to the classic English garden aesthetic,” says Singh.

“Indian hand-woven textiles like Ikat, block print, and Chikankari in contemporary furniture pieces such as chairs, ottomans, and cushions create unique optics. You can pair these fabrics with sleek metal or wooden frames, creating a beautiful contrast between traditional and modern styles. And who can forget the art? Traditional Indian art forms such as Madhubani and Warli paintings are being used in contemporary homes as wall art or as inspiration for graphic prints on curtains and upholstery. By blending traditional Indian crafts and textiles with modern design sensibilities, designers are creating stunning spaces that showcase the cultural heritage of India,” concludes Pereira
