
The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has approved the construction of 1.41 lakh additional houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0, taking the total number of sanctioned homes beyond 10 lakh units.
The move underscores the government’s continued commitment to affordable housing and the broader goal of ‘Housing for All.’ The newly approved projects will be implemented across 14 states and Union Territories, including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Haryana, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
Key Highlights
These regions were prioritized based on housing demand and urban population growth, particularly targeting economically weaker sections (EWS) and low-income groups (LIG).
During the latest Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) meeting chaired by Housing Secretary Srinivas Katikithala, the ministry emphasized the importance of ensuring adequate infrastructure, roads, and transport connectivity near housing sites. The session also reviewed progress under PMAY-U 2.0 and discussed steps to improve project delivery timelines.

PMAY-U 2.0 aims to promote inclusivity, equity, and women’s empowerment by encouraging house ownership in the name of female heads or joint ownership. By expanding access to safe and affordable homes, the initiative contributes to building socially inclusive and sustainable urban communities across India.
