The Harekala Gram Panchayat in Ullal taluk, under the Mangaluru assembly constituency represented by Speaker UT Khader, is in the final stages of allocating sites to over 270 homeless families. The panchayat has identified 9.5 acres in Malar village, and a final list of beneficiaries will be prepared soon, said GP Vice-President Majeed Harekala.
Majeed stated that the layout will include essential infrastructure to improve living conditions, as envisioned by MLA Khader. The last land distribution by the panchayat took place more than two decades ago. Recently, MLA Khader directed revenue officials to identify land to accommodate pending applications.
Currently, 279 applications are under verification by the tahsildar, revenue inspector, and village accountant to ensure that only eligible families receive free land allotments.
Each family will be allocated a three-cent plot. The identified land in Malar village was initially hilly terrain, but it has been leveled using earthmover machines to facilitate site distribution. Homeless families will be prioritized, and officials will strictly check to prevent multiple applications from the same family.
After site allotment, the gram panchayat will seek assistance from the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation to construct houses under government schemes. The panchayat also has additional revenue land in other locations that could be developed into housing layouts. Proposals have been submitted to secure approvals for future projects, aiming to provide long-term housing solutions for deserving families and improve their overall quality of life.
