DDA Nears Completion of Kathputli Colony Flats

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has announced that approximately 1,400 of the 2,800 flats under the Kathputli Colony redevelopment project are nearing completion and are expected to be handed over by March 2026.

This initiative represents Delhi’s first in-situ slum rehabilitation project, aimed at providing permanent housing to the colony’s traditional performing artists and craftsmen while preserving their community bonds.The project, developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) on a 5.2-hectare site in West Delhi, was launched to rehabilitate residents who had been living in Kathputli Colony for nearly 50 years.

Families were relocated to transit camps at Anand Parbat in 2013, with most moved by 2017 despite initial opposition. Out of 3,292 eligible residents, 2,800 were moved to transit housing while the remaining were allotted flats in Narela.

Officials confirmed that fire safety and other regulatory approvals are in progress. The fire department has identified minor deficiencies, which are being resolved before final allotment. Once clearances are granted, eligible beneficiaries will receive their flats through a draw of lots.

Union Minister M. L. Khattar earlier reviewed the project, directing all stakeholders — including DDA and the concessionaire — to expedite completion. Construction of 10-storey towers resumed in 2018 after legal delays, and finishing work is ongoing for community facilities such as halls and fire exits. The project’s progress marks a milestone in Delhi’s urban renewal and inclusive housing efforts.
