My first site visit still provides me with a memory of the smell of wet cement. I was a newly graduated kid at that time- nervous, but excited.
I was standing in front of steel rods and shuttering and I realized that this was not all about concrete and bricks. It was about shaping lives. Being a graduate in civil engineering, I aspired to construct some of the best structures in the town. However, it was not long before reality informed me otherwise. Even construction of a small house, an apartment, or a single toilet is a serious business. It carries responsibility.
Engineer’s Day is also about the future. Things are changing fast. The world is getting taller. Technology is getting smarter. Climate change demands new ways of thinking. Green buildings, rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient solutions, recycled materials, are not an option: they are a necessity. To those contemplating civil engineering, my advice is simple: pursue this career if you want to create. Pursue it if you want to affect people’s lives quietly. Pursue it if you want to leave something behind that is bigger than you. Remember: it takes time, hard work and persistence. But the satisfaction is like no other. As I write this, I can't help but remember my first site visit. I can still hear the clanging of steel, the voices of the masons, and the sounds of concrete being poured. Despite the fact this was not my cup of tea, the feelings I have on site remain the same.
